Courier Jobs

A courier firm refers to a company that provides delivery services around the globe or locally. However, a courier may also refer to an individual who either works for such large companies or is self-employed. A courier is a trained professional whose main job is to deliver packages, documents and other items locally or internationally.

A courier employed with a courier company is usually assigned certain routine tasks and clients that he or she needs to deal with on a daily basis. Depending on the needs of a client a courier may be required to transport any kind of material such as supplies, specimens, documents or reports, payment cheques and drafts, etc.

Types of Courier Jobs

Based on the type of employment, courier jobs are broadly of two kinds:

Self-employed Couriers: This type of courier job is usually freelancing in nature. All you would need is some experience in the field, a good knowledge of the area that you plan to cover, a van or any other efficient mode of transportation. The advantage of this kind of a courier job is that you are your own boss and answerable only to yourself. The flip side is that you would have to take care of every aspect of the business by yourself and also gain leads on your own.
Company-employed Couriers: Such couriers are employed by courier companies or other freelancing couriers. These courier jobs are great if you are looking to gain some experience in the field before taking off on your own. Wages may be payed on a daily basis depending on the number of deliveries made, or as a salary on a monthly basis.

Courier Jobs Description

There are some typical activities that tend to be common to all courier jobs. Couriers are expected to be courteous and deal with clients, their needs and their concerns in a professional manner. Delivery and pick ups are required to be made promptly and accurately to the correct address. Couriers need to be punctual and follow the schedules and routes designated to them. Confidentiality is also an important thing to be understood as a part of the jobs, based on the requirement of the client.

Courier Job Requirements

As with all other jobs, courier jobs entail certain requirements. A person to be hired as a courier must have a High School Diploma as their minimum qualification. A valid driving license with a good driving record is also a must. Some courier firms insist on a certain number of years of prior driving experience.

Excellent communication and customer service skills are a plus for couriers, to be able to effectively deal with clients. Flexibility in terms of work hours is always appreciated, to make deliveries at different times of day or night. Quick learning abilities are also a plus, since a courier would be required to learn a great amount of policies, procedures and more in a short period of time.

Most courier jobs involve on-the-job training for new comers with a more experienced or senior courier.
