A career in providing courier services can be very rewarding if you are the type of person cut out for the job. Since couriers are used by almost everybody in this day and age for all their transport and delivery needs, there is really no dearth of jobs or career opportunities in the field. All that you need to do before you get started with a courier career is to make sure you understand everything involved with the job, and if you are ready to take up such a career or not.

As is the case with many other professions, courier careers can be of two kinds. You can either end up working for a courier firm, or become self-employed. Let's take a look at both types of courier careers.

Careers at a Courier Company

Working for a courier firm or company can provide you with all the necessary experience that you need to make it in the field of courier service, especially if you are just starting out. Also, you would be involved only with the transportation, delivery and reporting aspects of the business, which would significantly lower your workload.

Self-employed Courier Careers

Being self-employed is always a great way to work, especially if you do not like reporting to a boss. There are many people who take up freelance courier careers in their free time to make a little extra cash. Others who find courier service more fulfilling take it up as a full time career. Either way, depending on the type of vehicle you own, you can take up local delivery work with individuals or with organizations.

If you prefer cycling, you can look at courier careers delivering letters, documents, money, etc. If you own larger vehicles such as motorcycles, cars, lorries or trucks, you can go in for the transportation of larger goods or items. The important thing to understand while pursuing self-employment options in courier careers is that you would need to generate a client base for your business all by yourself. So finding new customers involves a huge effort to market yourself successfully, which is something you must be willing to do.

Courier Careers Requirements

Some of the important requirements you must be able to fulfill before considering courier careers are:

Work Hours: Delivering packages for people is a highly time sensitive activity, and sometimes you must be willing to work nights as well, to complete overnight deliveries.
Driver's License: You must have valid driver's license for the type of vehicle you will be driving, depending on its capacity. You must also make sure you have vehicle insurance.
Customer Skills: You must be able to deal effectively and patiently with clients, especially the impossible ones.
Organization Skills: The more highly organized you can get, the better are your chances at a successful courier career.
