Courier Costs
Courier is a service that is used to pick up, transport and deliver documents and packages of all shapes, sizes and dimensions. In urban societies, it is quite uncommon to find anyone who might not have used a courier service at least once. Courier has evolved tremendously over a long period of time. Courier services have their roots in the messengers that kings of yesteryear used to send messages across kingdoms.
Courier vs. Post Office Services
Before the widespread use of courier, people used government run post offices to send any type of document or parcel. Initially, it would take days and even months for these to be delivered, depending on the distances. However, post offices later introduced speed post services that allowed packages to be delivered faster at a higher cost.
Even then, the surety of a package being delivered and in good condition has always been sort of unreliable with the post office. When delivery services were privatized and courier companies came into being, courier costs were pretty steep, but many were bowled over by the high quality of service provided by these companies.
Even though courier costs have come down drastically since the service first started, the quality of service has only gone up, with more and more value added services being provided to customers. This is largely owing to the huge levels of competition in the market.
Cutting Courier Costs
If you tend to send out couriers quite often, or you are sending out a large package, there are some ways in which you can try and reduce courier costs.
- If you are not in a hurry to send out packages, then you can always consider waiting for holiday seasons like Thanksgiving or Christmas, when courier costs tend to be slashed quite drastically. Due to the huge volume of packages being sent out during these times, large discounts are offered by most courier companies.
- Another way to cut courier costs is to turn to smaller firms, local couriers and independent couriers for small local deliveries. Their services tend to be just as good and cost lower compared to large corporations and big brands.
- Many websites on the internet provide comparison tools where you can look up several courier services and compare their prices. This is another good way to bring down courier costs.
- Certain types of websites also allow you to post your package and time specifications. Couriers will then place bids on these, and you can choose the bid that costs the lowest.
A word of caution however, is to not get too carried away while trying to lower courier costs. There are a few companies that might offer ridiculously low prices, but these might just be ways to deceive you. There could be certain hidden costs involved that would creep up on you in the final bill. You may not be informed of customs charges, extra tax charges, etc. when the initial quote is made.
You also need to make sure you provide the exact size and dimensions of the package to get an accurate quote from courier companies.
