Couriers are in great demand today, given the large number of parcels that are being shipped from one place to another all over the world. What is Long Distance Courier?

There are many types of roles and jobs that you can take up within the courier service industry. Long distance courier is one such field where you might be interested to work.

Long distance courier, as the term suggests, is involved with making deliveries that are not local. In other words, deliveries are made outside the boundaries of a city, a state, or a country. ‘Long Distance’ as such is a relative term and can mean anything, based on the mode of transportation used.

Types of Long Distance Courier Jobs

Depending on your level of qualification and experience, you can take up different long distance courier jobs with courier companies. Delivery jobs require just a high school diploma. Some types of delivery jobs are:

Inter-city or Inter-state Deliveries: If you have a large vehicle such as a truck or van and you enjoy driving and being out on the road, such deliveries could be just the job for you. You would be required to make a trip to the customer’s residence or work place, pick up packages and then travel to the destination where the delivery needs to be made. A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are a must for this job.
International Deliveries: Large corporations use air travel to make their international deliveries on time. Some of these corporations own airplanes that operate on a daily basis between locations, taking packages back and forth. For such arrangements, an employee is sent along with the shipments to oversee the loading and unloading operations and entrust them safely to the local courier office at the destination city.

Air Couriers: These are independent long distance courier jobs that do not require you to be employed with any company. You essentially do not get paid, but you travel on discount tickets to various destinations and provide your baggage quota on the commercial airplane to transport courier packages. This is a great way to find cheap flight tickets when you already have a trip planned ahead of time.

Apart from delivery jobs, there are several other positions in courier companies for long distance deliveries. GPS tracking systems are always in place and people are needed to help set up these systems and run them efficiently. Ground staff to help with loading and unloading goods from airplanes and personnel who sort out parcels according to address at the destination are a few more examples of long distance courier jobs.
