What is an Independent Courier?

Students may also take up such a job as a part time opportunity. Bicycle couriers operate on a local level, usually working with small parcels such as letters and documents that can be delivered within a few hours.
Motorcycle Couriers: This is again a job for people who love to be on the road and ride long distances. Motorcycle couriers work locally and also sometimes travel between cities to make deliveries. They are able to handle slightly larger packages when compared to bicycle couriers. Since motorcycles move faster than bicycles and also navigate traffic better when compared to trucks and vans, these are highly preferred local courier services.
Van Couriers: These couriers own a pickup van or truck that can be used to transport larger parcels. They take up deliveries of items such as gifts, flowers, furniture, etc. either locally or within a state. However, there is again a limitation of the size and dimensions of the packages that can be delivered using this type of courier.
Air Couriers: This is perhaps the most exciting type of work for an independent courier. An air courier is a person who travels with courier parcels and packages, giving up their baggage space on commercial flights in exchange for cheap tickets. These couriers are usually allowed only one carry-on bag, and meet up with a courier official at the airport to collect the packages that need to be delivered.

How to Become an Independent Courier

The job of an independent courier is a pretty easy one. No special qualifications are required; a high school diploma is all that is needed. However, a lot of dedication and enthusiasm for the job are mandatory, since you will be responsible for the belongings of other people and need to get them delivered on time, without fail.

You would also require a valid driver’s license, and a few years of driving experience with a good track record. Nice communication skills and customer handling skills can also help you be a successful independent courier. To find clients and jobs, you can freelance with established courier companies or market yourself in newspaper listings, yellow pages and internet directories.
